The Real Thing

One of the things I was so excited about when we moved into this house was the fireplace. A woodburning fireplace at that. When it comes to fires, you just can't beat the real thing. We had a gas fireplace two houses ago and it was fun, but it just wasn't....

Anyway, no one knew what shape the fireplace was in, so it took us awhile to get around to getting it cleaned and inspected. Finally that happened, and then on Monday the Badger and the boys went and got us a load of wood. The boys even did all the stacking, fueling my theories that boys not only need large muscle chores but that they can do more hard work than they want you to believe.

So Tuesday night we had the first real fire in a real fireplace in our own home of our nine year marriage. It was exciting. Here is the master firebuilder:

Oh, the memories this brings back! When I was growing up my dad thought he could save money by partially heating our house with a woodstove. Cords and cords of oak were delivered to our driveway, and we kids had to toss the wood down the stairs next to the house so it could be stacked outside the door closest to the woodstove in the daylight basement. The stack had to be stable and self-supporting, because letting it lean against the house would let whatever critters were in the wood eat our house. We also had to make sure it didn't block any of the windows. :) OY.

Then my dad would build hot hot fires in the woodstove, so the temperature in the basement was sometimes pushing 85, and we knew that if we ever needed to we could cook breakfast on its top. Cozy.

I'm jealous. I wish I had a fireplace. Someday...
