Rice Cereal and Rabbit

I start my kids on solids a little later in life than is culturally typical, waiting for when the strange force inside of me called "Mother Instinct" says it's time. The time for my Rabbit to start eating big people food is now here. So last time I was at the store, I bought a box of organic rice cereal.

For the first feeding, I decided to let Fish do the honors as a boost to his confidence and feelings of usefulness within our family. I also let Bean wield the camera so he wouldn't feel bad about not being able to feed the Rabbit. Everyone was placated and I thought we were all set up for success.

However, the Rabbit was not impressed with the rice cereal.

See? She's definitely not excited.

What with the Rabbit's lack of interest and all, Fish lost interest. So I was left to try to coax a few bites into my tenacious youngster. She was much more interested in the spoon than in the cereal.

What I think is odd about this whole thing is that she scuttles all over the house putting everything in her mouth and swallowing it. She loves leaves and tape. So why did she spit the cereal back at me? I thought she would love it.

Hmmmm..... Do they make tape-flavored baby cereal?

I'm with you on the non-food thing. Cindy Lou has for a long time greatly preferred tasting random detritus picked up from the floor than anything actually nutritious. She was late to come around to baby food, and quick to abandon it. And then she has the nerve to be picky! Thank heavens for (all-natural) deli turkey.

For a minute, I thought that top picture was a picture of Fish when he was a baby!!

What about leaving the cereal on the floor for her to find? Maybe that would suit her independent soul!

I'm with you on the not feeding them until I think they are ready. I followed the Dr. with Tiger, but with Blanket I did my own thing, and was much happier about it. I just wish he liked more than processed baby food. The homemade stuff just isn't his style. I guess he'll go hungry when I take him off it around his birthday.

Hmmmm . . . my gut thinks the Rabbit is more interested in finding out about her world, and what you all do at the table, than she is in food. ;o)

If you're really set on giving her solids already, why not let her play with some on the high chair tray? They do make organic Cheerios . . .
